A Visionary Founder & Owner
1961 - 2022
A brilliant & gifted mind, through which designs and ideas flowed naturally and seamlessly, with a vision to change the interior design industry through his creatives, he was the founder of Al-Hatim Decor in Kenya. With more than 40 years of Interior Design Experience, he brought a major changes to the interior design industry and revolutionized the concept of turnkey fit-outs.
"I dream to build a business where every Interior Design need is met, all under one roof at Al-Hatim Decor; through our extensive range of products and services and our vision, this has been achieved."
Being a Philanthropist all his life, he brought light to many lives & families, and even after his departure from this world, his vision still lives on and continues to enrich and empower many.
Every company has a beginning. For Al-Hatim Décor, that beginning was built on the vision, determination and entrepreneurial spirit of Taher Mohsin.
Taher was the father of Murtaza Taher and the man whose early efforts laid the foundation for what would eventually become one of Kenya's established interior design and turnkey fit-out companies.
The story began modestly.
In the early 2000s, Taher started a small business focused primarily on residential painting and decoration. It was not yet the multidisciplinary interior design, construction and fit-out operation that Al-Hatim would later become. But from those humble beginnings came something more important: a willingness to work, learn, adapt and see opportunity where others saw limitations.
When his son, Murtaza Taher, joined the business, the two began exploring how the company could grow beyond painting and basic contracting. Together, they identified a gap in the Kenyan interior construction market.
Clients often had to work with separate designers, contractors, suppliers and tradespeople to complete a single interior project. Taher and Murtaza believed there was an opportunity to create a company capable of bringing those disciplines together and providing clients with a more complete interior design and turnkey fit-out solution.
That decision would ultimately change the direction of the company.
What began as a small painting business gradually developed into Al-Hatim Décor, providing interior design, construction and fit-out services for increasingly complex projects.
Taher's contribution was not limited to establishing the business. He also played an important role in shaping Murtaza's journey into interior design. One particular moment would prove surprisingly significant.
Despite Murtaza coming from a professional Information Technology background, Taher encouraged him to take on the challenge of creating a design render for an office project. Murtaza would later describe his father's insistence on completing that render as one of the pivotal moments that led him into the world of interior design and construction.
What may have appeared to be a simple assignment became the opening of an entirely new professional path. It reflected something deeper about Taher's influence: encouraging the next generation to attempt what they had not done before.
Today, Al-Hatim Décor has progressed far beyond its original beginnings. The company has grown into a Nairobi-based interior design and turnkey fit-out contractor, delivering commercial, retail and other interior projects and working on projects associated with international brands including Adidas, Nike, Puma and LC Waikiki. Yet behind that growth lies the foundation established years earlier. Taher's legacy is present in the company's willingness to evolve. It is present in its entrepreneurial culture. It is present in the belief that a small beginning should never determine the size of the dream. And most importantly, it continues through the people who carried that vision forward.
For Murtaza, Taher was not simply the person who started a company.
He was a father, mentor and guide whose decisions helped shape the direction of both his son's life and Al-Hatim Décor. The business they worked on together became something larger than either of them could have known during those early years. From residential painting to interior construction. From small projects to complex turnkey fit-outs. From a family business to working alongside internationally recognized brands. The company evolved, but its roots remained.
Today, as Al-Hatim Décor continues expanding its capabilities in interior design, retail fit-out, commercial interiors, joinery, construction and project management across Kenya and Africa, Taher Mohsin remains an important part of its story.
His greatest legacy is perhaps not a particular building or completed project.
It is the foundation upon which everything that followed was built.
A beginning created with courage.
A business built through perseverance.
And a vision carried forward by the next generation.
Founder and Father of the Al-Hatim Journey
His vision continues through every project we build, every person we develop and every new chapter of Al-Hatim Décor.
